After his arrest, Reyes entered into a plea bargain and agreed to serve between 33 years and life in prison. But he hit his lawyer at his 1991 sentencing. This incident led the judge to sentence him to life in prison.
Trisha Meili The incident took place on the night of April 19, 1989, in the North Woods of Central Park in Manhattan. Patricia Meili was a 28-year-old investment banker at the time, and the attack left her in a coma for 12 days. In fact, Matías was only 18 years old.

Also, in 1990, the police brought in Korey, Raymond, Antron, Kevin, and Yusef as suspects in the crime. The minors then went to several hours-long interview sessions conducted by investors.
The defendants were later charged with rape, molestation, assault, robbery, riot, and attempted murder. They were also accused of other attacks in the park, based solely on confessions. But they told in a documentary that those confessions were false and forced.
In December 1990, Wise was also cleared of those charges. But he convicted him of sexual abuse, assault, and riot and sentenced him to 5 to 15 years. The four youngest children, Antron, Richardson, Salaam, and Santana, served their time in youth centers. They were later transferred to adult prisons at the age of 21.

Matias met Wise in Rikers Island prison and they also fought each other over a television. They met once more in 2001, in the Auburn prison yard. For the first time, Reyes felt guilty that Korey Wise was still being held for a sin he never committed.
For this reason, in 2002, Matías Reyes confessed to having raped Trisha Meili and his DNA also matched the runner’s rape kit. Finally, all the wrongfully convicted teenagers were released then. They later sued New York City in 2003 for malicious prosecution, racial profiling, and emotional distress.
