Masai Ujiri is a Nigerian-Canadian professional basketball executive and former NBA player. However, he retired from his career in 2002 and became a scout for Orlando Magic and then Denver Nuggets. As of now, he is the president of basketball operations for the Toronto Raptors within the National Basketball Association.

As president, he worked for Usher for a period and helped the team win its first NBA championship in 2019. MASAI UJIRI: BIO, FAMILY, EDUCATION

Ujiri was born on July 7, 1970 in Bournemouth, England to a supportive Nigerian family. When he was two years old, he returned with his family to Nigeria and grew up in Zaria, Nigeria. He was born while the father’s son was working as a hospital administrator and nursing educator. While his mother was also a doctor from Kenya. From the age of 13, he started playing basketball and played association football in his youth.

He left Nigeria and traveled to Seattle, WA where he joined Nathan Hale High School and stayed with a Nigerian family. He flew there to pursue his dream career as a basketball player. Then he enrolled and played two years of basketball at Bismarck State College, a junior college in North Dakota. After that, he transferred to Montana State University Billings but left after one semester and returned to England to start a professional career.

From an early age, he was involved in basketball and spent his professional playing career in Europe. He played one season with the Solent Stars with whom he won the National Basketball League Division 3 title. Before his retirement in 2002, he played in Denmark and spent three months in Finland with BC Nokia. He also founded Giants of Africa in 2003 with the aim of discovering new basketball talent.

After his retirement, he started working as a youth coach in Nigeria. He spent his four seasons with the Denver Nuggets, the Toronto Raptors hired him as director of Global Scouting. Subsequently, he became deputy general manager of the team. However, in 2010, he returned to the Nuggets as general manager and executive vice president in charge of basketball operations. In 2013, he was named NBA Executive of the Year.

He then re-signed a 5-year, $15 million contract as executive vice president and general manager of the Toronto Raptors. During the 2014 game against the Brooklyn Nets, he shouted F*** Brooklyn! who later apologized for his poor choice of words. Following this, he was fined $25,000 by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. As an activist, he served as director of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders Africa program. Recently, in February 2020, he accompanied Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on an official visit to various African countries.
