CAREER OF MARY MAPES | CBS
In 1989 Mapes went to work for CBS News in Dallas, Texas. She was hired with the help of CBS in 1999 as an assigned producer for Dan Rather and the 60 Minutes Wednesday show. At 60 Minutes on Wednesday, Mapes produced the tale announcing US military research into the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the narrative that revealed Strom Thurmond’s unrecognized biracial daughter, Essie Mae Washington, winning an award Peabody in 2005 for the first. Mapes produced a 60 Minutes segment on Wednesday that aired a complaint against President George W. Bush’s military service, supported by records purportedly taken from the documents of Bush’s commander, Lt. Col. Jerry B Killian. These documents were added to CBS by Bill Burkett, who became a retired lieutenant colonel in the Texas National Guard. During the segment, Dan Rather claimed that the documents had been authenticated by document experts, but ultimately, CBS should neither definitively confirm nor deny their authenticity. Additionally, CBS had no original files, only faxed copies, as Burkett claimed to have burned the originals. The 60 Minutes filing accused Bush, the son of an ambassador, congressman and future president, of receiving preferential treatment by passing over hundreds of candidates by making use of the Texas Air National Guard. [10] Then-Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes said he made phone calls to get Bush into custody. [9] Once the document was released, it immediately came under heavy criticism, particularly when a key report could not be authenticated. Following the discussion of the use of the files, CBS ordered an independent internal investigation. The investigating panel morphed into one consisting of Dick Thornburgh, former Governor of Pennsylvania and United States Attorney General in the George H. W. Bush administration, and Louis Boccardi, retired chairman and CEO of the ‘Associated Press. The Thornburgh-Boccardi dossier indicated that several former professors or colleagues of Bush informed Mapes that Bush had told them he wanted to visit Vietnam, but could not go because there were others. ahead of him with more seniority. Mapes was criticized for not running them in the 60 Minutes document to balance the claim that Bush served in the Guard to avoid serving in Vietnam. Mapes was also criticized for calling Joe Lockhart, a senior John Kerry campaign official, before the piece was posted, and offering to put his source, Bill Burkett, in touch with him. However, Mapes said Burkett asked her to give her phone number to someone in the Kerry camp to talk about the Swift Boat campaign, for which she asked permission. She said, in retrospect, she wouldn’t have performed it now. Lockhart and Burkett also said the release had nothing to do with the CBS document or the documents, but with the Swift Boat campaign. As a result of the investigation, Mapes, along with others involved, were charged with breaches of judgment. Her 15-12 month tenure at CBS ended as she was fired following the scandal. Although the panel did not determine that the memos were fraudulent, it said that “significant questions remain” regarding their authenticity. According to the panel, a “myopic zeal” to be the first media outlet to carry an unprecedented story about the President’s National Guard transporter turned into a “key aspect to why CBS News produced a story that didn’t has become neither honest nor accurate and does not a no longer meet the organization’s internal standards. The panel proclaimed that at least four elements contributed to the choice to release the record: “The combination of a brand new management team at 60 Minutes Wednesday, super deference given to a particularly respected maker and the presenter of network news, aggressive pressure and a zealous. notion in the truth of the article”. The panel also said it “cannot conclude that a 60-minute political schedule on Wednesday drove both the timing of the segment’s viewing or its content.” [16] Mapes turned terminated by CBS in January 2005. Asked to resign were Senior Vice President Betsy West, who oversaw CBS News’ prime-time programs; 60 Minutes Wednesday executive producer Josh Howard; and Howard’s assistant, the show’s senior producer Mary Murphy. Mapes said she no longer believed her actions were blameless, but used the storytelling. She said the authenticity of the documents had been corroborated using an unnamed supply of keys and that reporters often have to rely on photocopied documents as the basis for verifying a story. Additionally, Burkett admitted to lying to Mapes and the 60 Minutes team about providing the documents. In an interview with The Washington Post, Mapes said Karl Rove had become “an inspirational figure” to critics of the segment. Rove called Mapes’s paintings “the gift that keeps on giving” because of the dismal underpinnings of the story and the simple boost he gave President Bush during his re-election campaign. Some Democratic critics of Bush, including Terry McAuliffe and Maurice Hinchey, pointed to the memos as coming from Bush’s marketing campaign to discredit the media’s exposure of Bush’s National Guard service and change the verbal exchange of topics like the Iraq War, singling out Rove, Ralph E. Reed, Jr., and Roger Stone.] Rove and Stone have denied involvement. In 2005, the Mapes e-book Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power was published. It became adapted into the 2015 film Truth, roughly the Killian Documents controversy, starring Cate Blanchett as Mapes and Robert Redford as Dan Rather. In the aftermath of the Rathergate scandal, Mapes began painting as an author and consultant, contributing to The Nation news magazine in 2007 and 2008. In the May 2016 issue of D Magazine, Mapes wrote a tale about the conviction of Tommy by Henry Wade in 1954. Lee Walker.
