Martin ritt

Controversial American director, who started his film career relatively late, at the age of 42.

The cause of the event was his relationship with the communist party, which is why he was persecuted in the so-called Hollywood witch hunt in the early 50s. But Ritt came to the movies after a long itinerary in the world of acting, both in theater as on television. He was born in New York in 1914, and after becoming interested in American football during his early years, he opted for the artistic world. He studied at St. John’s University, and later took up acting himself, acting in the play “Porgy and Bess” and writing as a screenwriter for the Federal Theater Project.

In the 1930s he came into contact with the communist party, although he was always very critical of them. His career until he was fifty was spent directing and performing a multitude of plays on Broadway, and also working on a few TV movies. In 1956 he began his film career by directing Where the City Ends , in which he criticized the previous years, condemning racism and government oppression. Until his death, Ritt would direct more than twenty films and garnered countless awards, including an Oscar nomination. Among his best films are The Long Hot Summer , Sounder , The Spy Who Came in from the Cold or Hud, the Wildest Among a Thousand .
