MARK FOSTER SINGER

After graduating from high school in 2002, Mark wanted to move to Sylmar, California to stay with his uncle where he could be closer to pursuing his musical dreams in Los Angeles. His early years in Los Angeles were very difficult for him. He said that for a good eight years he was just this kind of starving entertainer delivering pizzas, sleeping on couches and sleeping in his car.

He worked a variety of odd jobs, including bar maintenance, waiting tables, telemarketing as well as painting houses. Mark in a 2012 interview with Tha Baltimore Sun, spoke about how he enjoyed the bartender and encouraged budding musicians to follow in his footsteps. He said that in Los Angeles, LA servers make over $100,000 a year. He didn’t have much success in his early years in Los Angeles.

His band nearly landed a record deal in New York when he was 21. He had the opportunity, two years later, to work with Dr. Dre’s label, Aftermath Entertainment. The deal fell through, however. He composed and performed lead vocals for the Toques’ song “Breakdown” which was featured in the 2006 film Stick It.

In 2008 Mark landed a job with the Mophonics label as a commercial jingle writer. Mark was able to write jingles, in this position, for companies such as Honey Bunches of Oats as well as Verizon. At that time, he was still struggling to find the right tracks to further break into the music industry. Later, he realized that he needed help in the form of band members due to writer’s block issues.

Mark the following year, 2009, recorded and released his first and so far only solo album, Solo Songs. The album contained nine tracks. It included demo versions of two songs from the Torches album, “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls)” and “I Would Do Anything for You”. A. In order to support his record, Mark played solo shows around Los Angeles. Mark organized a group of three in October 2009, he, his colleague Mark Pontius and his longtime friend Jacob “Cubbie” Fink. His namesake, Mark Pontius, was so fond of Foster’s style of music. He left his group Malbec to join it as the drummer of the new group. Jacob had then lost his job in a television production company.

He left following the recession. He joined Foster’s band as a bassist. The band was to be called “Foster and the People”. However, many people have confused the name with “Foster the People”. Later, he decided to name him instead. Mark preferred the title ‘Foster the People’ as it evoked an image of care and nurturing. The group released their first song called “Pumped Up Kicks”.

Pumped Up Kicks” was a song about gun violence they recorded at Mophonics in 2009. Mark wrote and recorded the song in five hours using Logic Pro software. He originally intended it to be a demo. Suddenly the demo became the full version of the song. They released the song in early 2010. Luckily, the song did well and spread all over the internet.

He eventually made his way to TV shows like Entourage as well as ad campaigns for companies like Nylon. Due to the song’s growing success, the band was signed in May 2010 to Columbia Records’ Startime International imprint on a multi-album deal. The song was officially released on September 14, 2020. The song was released in January 2011, on the band’s first non-commercial single, Foster the People.

It started climbing the US charts a few months later. On September 10, 2011, the song had peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In February 2012, the song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The band’s first studio album was Torches, released on May 23, 2011. It earned Mark his second Grammy nomination, winning for Best Alternative Music Album.

It peaked at number 8 on the Billboard 200. Mark produced electronic music as Mister Smims of the duo Smims & Belle alongside som Innis. Mark’s band released their second album, Supermodel on March 14, 2014. They then released their third album Sacred Hearts Club on July 21, 2015. Foster the People has since released another EP, four additional singles and several collaborations. Mark Foster is currently writing a horror film.
