Marisa Tomei

Marisa Tomei can boast of being one of the few actors who has an Oscar for a comedic role. Her filmography has been marked by comedy and especially by the romantic, although she is not the typical funny one on duty.

Marisa Tomei was born on December 4, 1964 in Brooklyn, New York. The daughter of a teacher and a lawyer, both she and her brother Adam developed a keen interest in acting. In fact, Adam is also an actor and has had supporting roles in titles like Independence Day and The Truman Show . Marisa began studying at Boston University, but she dropped out after a year, when she landed a role in the television series As the World Turns (1983). Her film debut was in a very minor role in Garry Marshall ‘s romantic comedy The Flamingo Kid .(1984). Curiously, this has been the genre in which the actress has lavished the most, who, however, has not reached the levels of popularity of romantic comedy stars such as Meg Ryan or Sandra Bullock . This is probably because not all of her roles have been starring her.

The first commercial title in which Marisa had a significant presence was in the comedy Óscar, remove your hands (1991), where she was the rebellious daughter of Sylvester Stallone , a criminal in the process of adapting to a new and legal life. A year later, she met her moment of glory thanks to the unexpected Oscar for best supporting actress that gave her the interpretation of her in the comedy My Cousin Vinny . Marisa was the girlfriend of the aforementioned Vinny, played by Joe Pesci, an inexperienced lawyer facing a complicated case. This statuette is very exceptional, since it is not often that the Academy rewards actors who play comedy characters, quite the contrary. It seemed clear, then, that the girl had been born for the genre. However, it is curious that Marisa is not particularly funny, although she has been able to perform perfectly in the complex world of comedy. In this genre, she has participated in titles such as Four Rooms (1995), where her small appearance is one of the funniest moments on the film. In the telephone conversation that she maintains with Tim Roth, when she is totally stoned and he is completely crazy, shows his excellent ability to make people laugh. Also funny are the titles Aggressive Executive (2003), where she fell in love with Adam Sandler or Wild Pigs (2007), where she was an attractive waitress who had to deal with the herd of crazy men who starred in the film.

However, and to be more concise, it is necessary to add the romantic adjective to Marisa’s comic vision in order to have a more reliable vision of her work. They belong to this group Only you (1994), What do women think? (2000), Always by your side (2001) or A touch of seduction (2005). In these titles she alternated leading roles with supporting ones, in the same way that in her filmography she knew how to introduce films from other genres. For example, she was the stressed and pregnant wife of Michael Keaton in the drama The Paper. Behind the news (1994). A drama was also Welcome to Sarajevo (1997), by Michael Winterbottom, where she was a humanitarian worker. Her dramatic genre also helped her get her second Oscar nomination thanks to In the Room (2001), where she lived a love story with a boy younger than her.

Marisa’s ability to fall in love was not only evident in romantic comedies. In both Alfie (2004) and Factotum (2005) she conquered the hearts of the protagonists, although given the more dramatic nature of these films, in none of them did she have the possibility of the “happy ending” typical of romantic comedies. On the other hand, in Marisa’s career there has also been time for action thanks to titles such as the thriller Killer Game (2000) or the terrifying Danika (2006). She now comes to the screens with the drama with drops of thriller Before the devil knows you’re dead . sidney lumethas composed a complex family story marked by tragedy, where Marisa is the wife of the older brother, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman .

Currently, Marisa has wrapped up filming for the sports drama The Wrestler , directed by the complex Darren Aronofsky . For the occasion, she has become a former stripper in a story about a retired wrestler, played by Mickey Rourke . Both actors will soon repeat in the thriller The Night Job .
