  1. When he was very young, his family moved to Germany when the Yugoslav Wars wreaked havoc in their native Yugoslavia.
  2. Later, his family moved back to Croatia, having just gained independence. He started playing football for NK Marsonia.
  3. His strong performances for NK Zagreb under Miroslav Blažević caught the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United.
  4. In 2007, Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb bought him for €1.3m to replace striker Eduardo who had joined Arsenal FC.
