Maria Adler (born 1990) is an American rape victim and long-distance trucker from Lynnwood, Washington. At the age of 18, she was raped by serial rapist “Marc O’Leary” in her one-bedroom apartment in 2008.
Based on Marie’s real-life story, Netflix launched the web series “Unbelievable” on September 13, 2019. This show is inspired by the Adler rape case and the Pulitzer Prize-winning article “An Unbelievable Story of Snuff”.
Actress Kaitlyn Dever plays the main role of Marie in this police series. Other than that, the other stellar cast of Unbelievable (2019) are Toni Collette (Grace Rasmussen), Merritt Wever (Karen Duvall), Vanessa Bell Calloway (Sarah), and Blake Ellis (Christopher McCarthy aka Marc O’Leary).

In her childhood, her biological father saw her only once. She doesn’t know much about her real mother. Also, her biological mother asked her boyfriend to take care of Marie.
As a result, Adler physically and sexually abused them. After this, she went into depression and mental stress. Therefore, she used to take the drug Zoloft (Sertraline), an antidepressant medication.
When she was young, many babysitters helped her. She often moved from one place to another to live. She lived in group homes and changed from 10 to 12 foster homes. - Later, he moved to Bellevue, Washington. A real estate agent, Shannon McQuery, adopted her.
- After a few months, his adoptive mother, Peggy Cunningham (Children’s Advocate), legally obtained custody of him.
- He re-enrolled in high school and began his education. In that place, he made many friends.
- Through a mutual friend, Marie met her boyfriend Jordan Schweitzer, a high school student. He worked at McDonald’s, a fast-food restaurant. Adler fell in love with and began dating Jordan.
- Peggy started the “Project Ladder” program to help adult children become independent.
- So, Marie earned enough money to move into a 1-bedroom apartment in Lynnwood, Washington. This entire process is monitored by the Project Ladder pilot program.
- Rape story: In 2008, Marc O’Leary entered her home and threatened her with a butcher knife. He tied her hands with shoelaces and gagged her mouth with underwear. Later, Marc O’Leary raped Marie Adler and captured some photos of her with her Sony Cybershot camera.

- After this horrible incident, he opened his scissor hand and called the police.
- Washington police began their investigation. Detective Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall investigated all the facts. But the police found many inconsistencies in his recorded statements during the investigation.
- In March 2009, the Lynwood City Court found her guilty of faking her rape and fined her US$500. Additionally, the Lynwood court ordered her to undergo a mental health count.
- As a result, serial rapist Marc O’Leary is released from police custody. Later, he raped many women and girls.
- After two and a half years, the police arrested him again and found him guilty of raping Marie and other girls. $500 was returned to Adler.
- But, Marie filed a legal case against the City of Lynwood and sued them. Later, this case was settled after giving him $150,000 US dollars.
