Maria has been following the same workout routine for more than 10 years. She trains 5 to 6 days a week for 30 to 60 minutes, of which 3 to 4 days are strength training. She trains each of her body parts with at least 3 exercises, 3 sets per exercise and 10-15 repetitions per set with a rest period of 30 seconds in between.
To save time, she usually does supersets that don’t involve resting between exercises. She also includes cardio on all days of her workout. She does high-intensity interval training (HIIT) by running, climbing stairs, or taking a spin class.

- Since Kang’s mother was overweight and suffered from many health-related illnesses, Maria’s outlook on health and fitness affected her, and she began engaging in activities such as running and aerobics.
- Kang briefly worked as a fitness writer for the popular website Bodybuilding.com.
- During her school days, she was bullied and made to harm, scratch and cut herself.
- She began competing in local beauty pageants at the age of 16 at the behest of her mother. She won several beauty pageants such as Miss Petite Teen International, Miss San Francisco Chinatown, Miss Philippines USA and Miss Bikini California.
- In 2003, she won the Miss Bikini California contest and took part in a photo shoot with other bikini models. Feeling exploited by the environment, she left the shoot and vowed never to attend a beauty or fitness event again.
- In 2004, Maria suffered from bulimia, which involved binge eating and then flushing through self-induced vomiting. She overcame this eating disorder by forcing herself to eat without vomiting. As a result, she gained weight until she weighed 145 pounds, which she believed to be overweight.
- She published her first book, titled The No MoreExcuse Diet: 3 Days to Beat Any Excuse, 3 Weeks to Learn New Eating Habits, 3 Months to Complete Transformation in March 2015 under the publication of Harmony, a division of Random House .
- Her nonprofit fitness lobby, Fit Mom, was renamed No Excuse Mom in January 2014.

- Her post was reported to Facebook’s administration and was touted as hate speech aimed at body-shaming mothers. As a result, her page was banned from the social media site for 2 days. Facebook later acknowledged that their page was automatically blocked because other users flagged its content as offensive.
- In December 2017, four years after her controversial post went viral, she recreated the same pose with her then older children and captioned it “What’s Your Reason.”
