Marcel Khalifé  ( مارسيل خليفة ) born June 10, 1950, is a Lebanese composer, singer and oudist, considered Palestinian in Palestine, Lebanese in South Lebanon, he sees himself as an  Arab musician . From 1970 to 1975, he studied then taught the oud at the conservatory of Beirut. In 1976, he created the  Al Mayadeen ensemble  and became internationally famous, notably for his songs  Oummi  ( My mother ),  Rita w’al-Bundaqiya  ( Rita and the rifle ) and  Jawaz as-Safar  (Passport), inspired by the poems of Mahmoud Darwish.

He receives the Palestine Music Award and donates the award money to the National Conservatory of Music at Beir Zeit University in Palestine. In 2005, he was named UNESCO Artist for Peace by the Director-General of UNESCO, Kōichirō Matsuura in “recognition of his fervent and generous commitment to musical heritage”.

Little known facts

Three times (1996, 1999 and 2003), Marcel Khalifé was prosecuted for his song  Je suis Joseph, Oh Père , written by the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. Khalife was accused of insulting religious values  ​​by including two lines of verses from a chapter of the Quran.
