During the 14th century, Mansa Musa ruled as emperor (manse) of the Mali Empire (about 1280–around 1337) In 1312, he was crowned emperor. He was the first African emperor to become well-known throughout all of Europe and the Middle East, and he was also the 9th emperor at the time.
