The legendary singer and actor Manolo Escobar passed away on October 24, 2013, at the age of 82, at his home in Benidorm. An icon of Spanish song, several generations are capable of humming his best-known songs, and his films contributed to the formation of long queues in theaters.

The creator of great hits such as “Mi carro”, “Porrompompero”, or “Y viva España” had announced in 2010 that he was undergoing chemotherapy treatment to treat the cancer he suffered from. Later, he announced his retirement from the stage.

Born on October 19, 1931 in Las Norias de Daza, next to El Ejido, in Almería, Manuel García Escobar was the fifth of the ten children of Antonio –hotelier– and María del Carmen –to whom he dedicated the famous song “Madrecita Maria del Carmen”-.

During the hard post-war years, Manolo’s father lodged Antonio Manzano, a school and music teacher who had lost his possessions and his family in the war, in his home. He educated all the children in the family, and also instilled in them a solid musical education.

At the age of 14, Manolo Escobar emigrated with his brothers to Barcelona. He worked as an apprentice in various trades and began his journey in show business with the ensemble “Manolo Escobar y sus guitarras”, together with his brothers Salvador and Baldomero. After his first records, he began to become famous.

Manolo Escobar made his film debut in 1963 with Los guerrillas , set in the War of Independence. His success led to a series of titles designed to show off him, such as My song is for you , with a minimal plot line, which served as an excuse for him to sing his famous songs. His acting skills were nil, but nevertheless, his films were very successful.

On numerous occasions he was paired on screen with Concha Velasco . Escobar, with his sideburns and his “good guy” appearance, represented the most traditional Spain, and his companion, the ye-ye girl, represented the new generations. Together they starred in But… what country do we live in? Almost public relations , Trial of skirts , In a place of the Manga and You owe me a dead man . In the end, tradition used to win out, and for example Velasco agreed to marry.

He retired from the stage after the remake of the classic Todo es posible en Granada (1982) . Since then he only partially resumed her career as an interpreter once, as a special guest on the series Manos a la obra .

After meeting the German Anita Marx in a nightclub, Manolo Escobar fell so madly in love with her that he didn’t let three months go by to marry her. The ceremony took place on December 10, 1959, by which time neither had learned the other’s language. His wife has survived him, as well as Vanessa, their daughter.
