Almost a month and a half after it happened, almost by chance, the news of his death has come out. At the age of 67, Ágata Lys has died, who became one of the symbols of the uncovering stage that characterized Spanish cinema during the late Franco regime and the transition.
Her real name was Margarita García Sansegundo, and she was born in Valladolid in 1951. She graduated in Philosophy and Letters, and studied dramatic art. But she undoubtedly stood out for her beauty, which made it possible for her to be signed as a stewardess in the popular Spanish Television contest “One, two, three, answer again”, where she appeared dyed blonde and chewing gum. The platinum blonde image would lead to her stage name of Ágata Lys, and to highly charged sensual photo shoots that evoked Marilyn Monroe .
His presence in titles such as Carnal Desire , Sex or no Sex or Vögel’s Merry Vampires leave no doubt about what was asked of him on movie screens. With Paul Naschy he would do The Frenchman’s Garden and The Transsexual . The presence in erotic comedies was common at a time when other valuable actors such as José Sacristán or Alfredo Landa had to sign up for what the industry demanded. It is still curious, however, that Lys shared a film with Landa in a title as prestigious as Los santos inocentes , directed by Mario Camus, a formidable adaptation of the novel by Miguel Delibes .
His is an irregular career, although there were works with prestigious directors such as León Klimovsky , Trauma , Fernando León de Aranoa , Familia , or Carlos Saura , Taxi . She did a lot of theater, and she always stood out as a wonderful Inés in the staging of “Juan Tenorio”. On television she would have a wide presence in the series Amar en tiempos revueltos , her last work before retiring to Benalmádena, Málaga, with the architect Fernando Soto, who died four years ago. Since then she had a very retired life, dedicated to one of her passions, painting.
