Born in Oberlin, Ohio, on August 27, 1965, Lynn Shelton studied at Oberlin College in Ohio, and at first intended to pursue acting, so she enrolled in Drama at the University of Washington. In New York she took creative photography classes at the School of Visual Arts. She got her start in the film industry as an editor, shortly before shooting a series of experimental shorts.
She made her debut as a director and screenwriter in the feature film field with We Go Way Back , where a 23-year-old girl imaginarily dialogues with her 13-year-old adolescent “self”. She was followed by Humpday , with Mark Duplass , where after a binge, a guy decides to shoot a pornographic movie with the help of an old friend. In My Sister’s Friend , starring the same actor, and with Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt , Jack hasn’t raised his head since his brother died, so he accepts the invitation of his best friend, Iris, to spend a week of reflection in her family home. Hannah, Iris’s sister, also unexpectedly shows up there.
The black comedy Laggies followed , with Chloë Grace Moretz , Keira Knightley and Sam Rockwell . Lynn Shelton has also worked in television with episodes of series such as Mad Men , Glow and Dickinson . She had married actor Kevin Seal, from whom she divorced in 2019. The marriage had an only son, Milo Seal.
