Lupita Tovar
Dracula’s bite didn’t make her an immortal vampire, but it did give her a long life. Lupita Tovar, who died at the age of 106 on November 12, 2016, was the protagonist of the Spanish version of “Dracula”, which was filmed at the same time as Bela Lugosi’s.
Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, on July 27, 1910, Guadalupe Natalia Tovar Sullivan was discovered by legendary documentary filmmaker Robert Flaherty, who brought her to Hollywood. There she obtained small roles in silent films, until the arrival of sound gave her the opportunity to work in numerous Spanish versions of major productions, such as Green Hell and Dracula .
After starring in Santa , the first sound film in Mexican cinema, she married producer Paul Kohner. Their son, Pancho Kohner, has produced titles like Madeline . Her daughter, Susan Kohner , was nominated for an Oscar for Imitation of Life in 1959. Her grandsons, Chris and Paul Weitz , also earned a nomination for the screenplay for Grown Up .
