Luis Sepulveda

Luis Sepúlveda passed away on April 16, 2020, as a result of Covid-19. 

Born on October 4, 1949, in the Hotel Chile de Ovalle, in the center of the country, Luis Sepúlveda was the son of a nurse and a member of the communist party, who had eloped because her father was opposed to romance. He studied directing at the Theater School of the University of Chile, and later graduated in Communication Sciences at the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
He began publishing at the age of 17. He achieved international recognition with “An old man who read love novels”, which became an international phenomenon in 1993. In 1971 he married Carmen Yáñez, with whom he had a son, Carlos Lenin. Although he divorced, the two met again twenty years later in Germany and got back together.

Left-wing political militant, first in the Communist Youth and then in the National Liberation Army, after Pinochet’s coup he was arrested, and later left Chile, in 1977, residing in various countries, and finally settling in Gijón, in 1997. There He founded the Ibero-American Book Fair.

Apart from shooting a short, Luis Sepúlveda wrote the script and directed the feature film  Nowhere . He also co -wrote Tierra del Fuego , directed by Miguel Littín . The Dutchman Rolf de Heer directed The Old Man Who Read Love Novels , based on his most popular book, while the Italian Enzo D’Alò filmed The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Him to Fly , an animated version of the work namesake.
