Lucy Liu
A cultured and beautiful woman, with a strong personality, she has had to fight so that her oriental exoticism was not a drag on her Hollywood career. And it doesn’t look like she got off the hook .
Genuinely American. Or at least her passport says that Lucy Alexis Liu, known as Lucy Liu, was born in Queens, New York, USA, on December 2, 1968. But it is clear that her oriental features betray oriental origins. And indeed, her parents are Chinese immigrants from Taiwan, and she actually didn’t learn English until she was 5 years old. She herself, proud of her ancestry, would graduate from the University of Michigan with a degree in Chinese Language and Culture; which did not prevent her from simultaneously acquiring skills in the fields of dance, choir and interpretation. She had previously passed through the University of New York, but apparently she did not like the atmosphere that was breathed in that academic institution.
Before finishing her studies, Lucy was chosen for the leading role in a staging of “Alice in Wonderland.” So after her gratifying experience, the girl decided to dedicate herself professionally to acting. So she went to Los Angeles, and was getting roles as an extra in television series likefeeling of living ,emergencies andX-files . Not memorable roles at all.
On the big screen she made a fleeting appearance as an ex-girlfriend inJerry Maguire (1996). She wouldn’t be remembered for her role, but being able to say that you were in a title of that magnitude was adding a notch to her acting career. And in fact, she had the immense fortune of having an important character inAlly McBeal (1997), a different series of lawyers for its hysterical protagonist, who became all the rage. Lucy seized the opportunity, and gave Ling Woo a strong character, a role that earned her an Emmy nomination and a Screen Actors Guild award.
From this moment Lucy had entered a wheel from which she was not willing to let go. So she did a nasty dominatrix role inPayback (1999), along with Mel Gibson , was also in the boxing filmPlaying at the top , or with the also quite westernized oriental Jackie Chan inShanghai Kid. From East to West (2000). Such baggage and the fashion of multiculturalism and the granting of roles to different racial ethnic groups allowed that inCharlie’s Angels (2000) , transition to the cinema of the famous television series, one of the celestial girls will take on Chinese features. Of course, she would be in the sequel, again with Drew Barrymore and Cameron Díaz , in 2003. That same year she would continue kicking, something she is very good at, under the orders of Quentin Tarantino , inKill Bill Volume 1 . Before I had been in the fantastic musicalChicago (2002) .
It is necessary to admit that in recent years the star of Lucy Liu has declined. Hollywood may not be racist, but giving lead roles to oriental actors doesn’t necessarily help you make money; On the other hand, they have considered that she is an ideal actress to put her voice in the animated filmKung Fu Panda (2008) and its sequel. He was in an interesting filmThe Slevin case (2006), but titles likeDomino (2005). When she tried again in another television series in 2008,Cashmere Mafia , the luck was not that of Ally McBeal . The same is true of Dirty Sexy Money , from the same period.
2010 marked her Broadway debut for Lucy. She has played the role of Annette in Yasmina Reza ‘s Tony-winning play “God of Carnage” . The actress remains single, living with her brother and her sister-in-law in New York.
