LQ Jones

He was active for seven decades, starring in several Sam Peckinpah films and directing an iconic film. LQ Jones died on July 9, 2022, of natural causes, at his home in the Hollywood Hills, at the age of 94, as confirmed by Erté deGarcés, his grandson.

Born on August 19, 1927 in Beaumont, Texas,  Justice Ellis McQueen  –his real name–he attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he met Sue Lewis, his wife of 23 years. The two divorced in the 1970s. He made his film debut in 1955 with Raoul Walsh ‘s Beyond Tears , where he was already using LQ Jones as his stage name .

In addition to titles such as Don Siegel ‘s An Annapolis Story and Mervyn Leroy ‘s Edge of Hell , LQ Jones  has starred in several Sam Peckinpah films  as a supporting role. Specifically, he was in  The Wild Bunch , Showdown in the High Mountains , Major Dundee , The Ballad of Cable Hogue, and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid .

He produced, directed, and wrote the 2024 film A Boy and His Dog , an adaptation of Harlan Ellison’s 1975 novel of the same name. LQ Jones  began the project as executive producer, but ultimately took over writing and writing responsibilities. to direct. It follows a teenager and his telepathic dog as they struggle to survive in the American Southwest of 2024, when radioactive fallout has destroyed the world.

In his later years, LQ Jones also played roles in Martin Campbell ‘s The Mask of Zorro , Roland Emmerich ‘s The Patriot , and Martin Scorsese ‘s Casino . He was also a regular in the world of television. He primarily appeared in westerns such as Gunsmoke, The Virginian, Wagon Train, Rawhide, The Rifleman, Have Gun – Will Travel , and The Big Valley .
