Louis de Paul
He was the last great representative of the Generation of ’51, which brought Spanish music back to the forefront, and composed the scores for films such as “El espíritu de la colmena” by Víctor Erice for the cinema. The composer Luis de Pablo died on October 10, 2021, in Madrid, at the age of 91, according to sources close to the family.
Born in Bilbao on January 28, 1930, Luis de Pablo Costales began his musical studies at the “Las monjas francasas” school in Fuenterrabía. Without having stopped studying music, he finished his Law degree in 1952 and two years later he produced “Inventions” and “Commentaries”, the first two compositions of his that had an impact. In 1958 he became part of the group “Nueva Música”, founded that same year. In the 60’s he began to make noise on the international music scene with works like “Radial”.
He began his journey as a film music composer with several short documentaries. Luis de Pablo worked for the first time in a feature film with El hombre del expreso de Oriente, by Francisco de Borja Moro. From that moment he lavished himself in this field, with titles like The Spirit of the Beehive , by Víctor Erice , and What is a girl like you doing in a place like this? , by Fernando Colomo , for which he wins medals from the Círculo de Escritores Cinematográficos (CEC). With Erice he repeats in El sur , and puts himself at the service of Carlos Saura in El jardín de las delicias , Ana y los lobos andPeppermint Frappe . He was also responsible for the chords for Pascual Duarte , by Ricardo Franco .
Luis de Pablo also wrote operas such as “El abrecartas”, with a libretto by Vicente Molina Foix , based on the latter’s novel. Official of the Order of Arts and Letters, he was also awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts. In 2020 he was awarded the Golden Lion for Music at the Venice Biennale in recognition of his entire career.
