Louay Kayali (Arabic: لؤي لؤي ‎), ( born January 20, 1934 – died January 26, 1978 ) was a modern Syrian artist .

Kayali first picked up the brush at the age of 11 before enrolling in Al-Tajhiz School in Damascus to study art. This is where his works were exhibited for the first time in 1952. He would continue his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, where he met his compatriot Wahbi al-Hariri , who would become his lifelong mentor and friend. .

  • 1961: He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome – Dept. of Decoration. He began his career as an art teacher in public schools in Damascus. He made his 3rd appearance at the International Modern Art Hall exhibition in Damascus, where he exhibited 28 oil paintings on canvas and 30 sketches. These paintings have without exception attracted the attention of artists, writers and the public.
  • 1962: He moved from teaching in public schools to teaching painting and decoration at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (later known as the Faculty of Fine Arts). April 5: He made his 4th appearance at the International Modern Art Hall in Damascus.

Biography

Born in Aleppo, Syria, in 1934, Louay Kayali studied art at the Accademia di Belle Arti after studying at the Al-Tajhiz school where his works were exhibited for the first time in 1952. There he met the Syrian artist Wahbi al-Hariri and the two strike up a lifelong friendship from Kayali. Al-Hariri would become his mentor as he was for the artist Fateh Moudarres whom Hariri introduced to Kayali in 1955. Moudarress and Kayali would together represent Syrian modern art at the Venice Biennale. He suffered from depression and died in 1978 from burns caused by his bed catching fire, apparently from a cigarette.

News and little known facts

Kayali sought to destroy all her work. During his adult life, the artist would fall into and out of depression, before tragically dying in a fire at the age of 44.

Louay Kayali ‘s influence had a huge impact even after his death. In 2008, Christie’s auctioned several of his paintings, including Motherhood, which sold for US$157,000. Meanwhile, Fisherman at Arwad, which sold for US$194,500 remains one of Christie’s Dubai’s highest auction prices.

In January 2019, he was featured as a Google Doodle on what would have been his 85th birthday[ 1 ].
