Loris Karius is the child of Christine and Harald Karius. He was born on June 22, 1993 in Biberach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. As a child, Karius had to choose between becoming a motocross rider as his father wanted, or a footballer, as his grandfather wanted. His grandfather, Karl, notably took him to soccer practice when his parents were working, which trained him to play soccer.

A young Karius then enrolled at the Pestalozzi-Gymnase Biberach high school where he honed his skills before joining the FV Biberach youth team in 1998.
