Loris Karius is the child of Christine and Harald Karius. He was born on June 22, 1993 in Biberach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. As a child, Karius had to choose between becoming a motocross rider as his father wanted, or a footballer, as his grandfather wanted. His grandfather, Karl, notably took him to soccer practice when his parents were working, which trained him to play soccer.
A young Karius then enrolled at the Pestalozzi-Gymnase Biberach high school where he honed his skills before joining the FV Biberach youth team in 1998. He spent two years there before moving to SG Mettenberg in 2000 and a year later at SSV Ulm 1846. After five years at the club, Karius moved to VfB Stuttgart where he came to the attention of German national youth team coaches and was called up to play for the Under-16 sides and 17 years old.
After an Under-16 match against Azerbaijan in 2009, Loris Karius and his family were invited to England by Manchester City who offered him a contract. He joined the club’s youth team that year but failed to earn a senior team during his two years there, prompting him to return to Germany on loan from Germany. A year later, in January 2012, Karius became the youngest goalkeeper in Bundesliga history. He set the record in a match against Hannover 96 on 1 December 2012 after replacing Christian Wetklo who had been sent off.
Karius made no further appearances that season, but became the team’s goalkeeper a year later. In the years to come, Karius showed growth and consistency, earning him an upgraded contract in January 2015. Later that season, he was voted the league’s second best goalkeeper, behind the Germany and Bayern Munich defender Manuel Neuer. His excellent performances caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool who paid Mainz £4.75m for his services.
At Liverpool, Karius had to face Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in first place, although he was later confirmed as the club’s first ever goalkeeper. After a few sub-par performances, the goalkeeper was let go, but he regained his first-choice spot after his competitor made some equally outrageous mistakes.

Annelie Alpert, who was crowned Miss Hamburg in 2009, was Karius’ first public relationship. The duo reportedly started in 2015, when the goalkeeper was still on the Mainz bench. She notably followed her man to England when he moved to Liverpool, but it kickstarted their relationship from start to finish, as the couple called it a year later. Before long, Karius was linked to Pamela Reif and Rose Cochrane-Stack, but it was with the latter that he was scouted more than twice.
