With her first feature, Salaam Bombay , Indian filmmaker Mira Nair earned an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Since then the prestige of this woman with liberal ideas has remained intact.
Born in Orissa, India, on October 15, 1957, Mira Nair attended the University of New Delhi to study sociology, however, at the age of 18 she was awarded a scholarship to go to Harvard University, in the United States. She so she packed her bags and there she went to study the career of image and sound. She began her life behind the cameras in the documentary genre. At the age of 22, she shot Jama Masjid Street Journal and four years later So Far from India , with American capital. Her next film, in co-production with her country, was a bit more daring as it dealt with the striptease dancers at a local India Cabaret .. Her controversial issues have always attracted this director and proof of this was the last documentary of hers that she shot in those early years of her career: Children of Desired Sex , already with entirely Indian capital. Mira Nair was then 30 years old.
Then her international break took place, and since then she has undoubtedly become the Indian filmmaker with the greatest projection outside her borders. Her debut in the fiction genre –although her films always have something of a documentary, depicting Indian culture in different countries– was Salaam Bombay , a brutal and realistic portrayal of the lives of several poor boys in the streets in Mumbai. The harshness of the film is in tune with great tenderness. The beautifully staged and photographed film had an enormous impact, earning it an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film. She did not win – that year, 1988, Pelle the Conqueror took him – but Nair’s career skyrocketed. The next film of hers was Mississippi Masala(1991), which told an interracial love story in Africa, and starred Denzel Washington and Sarita Choudhury . Curiously, during the filming, Nair met her husband. In fact, there are more things that link her to the dark continent, since she currently lives in South Africa with her family.
In 1995 Nair directed Cuando salí de Cuba , a film that was not very funny but that counted on the presence of the recently awarded Oscar winner Marisa Tomei . And a year later the filmmaker took a very risky step when she made a film full of eroticism called Kamasutra . Although the film was too gimmicky and not very bright, at home he ran into a lot of trouble with the authorities because of its subject matter, and Nair went to court repeatedly over the course of two years. In short, she had brought it on herself… In 1998 she shook off all that controversy with another intercultural film, albeit quite bland, entitled My Own Country , which once again featured Tomei, this time accompanied by Naveen Andrews, who years later would triumph in the Lost series .
His filmography until then had been a bit disappointing, especially after his debut in Salaam Bombay . But then, in 1991, Nair came back to haunt her with a joyous film, full of the colorful culture of her country. The monsoon wedding returned the director to her place and traced the path she should follow. The film deservedly received the Golden Lion at the Venice Festival. The following year, in addition to a somewhat bland comedy: Ciegas de amor , she shot the segment “India” of the ensemble film 11’09”01. September 11 . Two years later, she traveled back in time and immersed herself in a luxurious period production: Vanity Fair.. The director had been impressed at the age of 16, when she first read William Makepeace Thackeray ‘s novel . The result was remarkable, with a splendid performance from Reese Witherspoon , as the climber Becky Sharp. And in 2007, Mira Nair returned to the present with El buen nombre , a deep and emotional drama that once again affected a story of Indian characters outside of her country. The film marked her reunion with Sooni Taraporevala , screenwriter of her films De ella Salaam Bombay , Mississippi Masala and My Own Country . Among her latest works, two shorts included in choral feature films stand out. She thus filmed the segment “How Can It Be?” For the movie8 , where eight directors talk about the changes in our planet; and also one of the love stories contained in the splendid New York, I Love You . Pending release is the film Amelia , a dramatic biopic about Amelia Earhart, a legendary American pilot, played by Hilary Swank .
