Italian director Lina Wertmüller passed away on December 9, 2021, at the age of 93, according to local media reports.

Born in Rome on August 14, 1928, Arcangela Felice Assunta Wertmüller von Elgg Spanish von Braueich – full name of  Lina Wertmüller – began her career as a theater actress, without much success. “A great friend, the actress Flora Carabella, introduced me to the world of the scene, and later suggested that I should become a director again. Giancarlo Giannini would  star at his orders in titles such as Mimi Metallurgical, wounded in his honor , Film of love and anarchy , Unusual summer adventure , and Pasqualino seven beauties , nominated three times for an Oscar, including for best direction, for which  Lina Wertmüller  made history, by becoming the first woman to achieve that feat. These four films were the highest grossing of the filmmaker’s career, which despite everything continued to have international repercussions, with titles such as  My Dear Professor ,  Fernando and Carolina , or  Too Much Love . 

Lina Wertmüller  was married to Enrico Job, an artistic designer who has worked on several of her films, until his death in 2008. “I miss him terribly. He was a special person, a great artist, man and friend. With him, a piece of my heart left me,” he said in an interview. She never felt discriminated against for being a woman. “The producers did not say anything. I did, that’s it. It bothers me that they ask me about it. Besides, women have always ruled,” she declared.
