PARENTS OF LETICIA BUFONI
The daughter of Jaime José da Silva (father) and Claudete Buffoni Crud (mother), wanted to be born a boy and therefore played in the street with the boys in her neighborhood. They spent their days playing football, skateboarding, and riding bicycles. She states:
“I grew up on the streets playing sports all the time. We didn’t have a computer or a smartphone. Everyone, the older boys and the kids had a skateboard, and after two months I was begging my parents and grandma to buy me one, that’s how it all started. ‘
Also, she never wanted to come in when her parents called or do what people expected of her. She also reveals that her parents struggled to do their hair, or even put a dress on her: “I was surrounded by boys so much that I wanted to be like them. I wanted to dress like a boy”
However, her parents, especially her father, wanted her to play football with other girls. “He didn’t want to see people call me tomboy or anything anymore,” she says. His father was also determined to stop him from skating by cutting his board in half.
‘ My dad broke my board so I wouldn’t skate anymore. He broke my board in front of me and said: you don’t skate anymore, ever again . Bufoni recalls. In fact, she cried for a day, then she scrapped some parts from friends to put together a new board. ‘ You know what? I love skateboarding and I’m going to skate . ‘
Bufoni’s first skate contest was held in São Paulo and included girls from all over Brazil, but her father wouldn’t allow her to participate. A friend who saw Bufoni skate and believed in her talent argued that she deserved a chance and convinced her father to let her compete.
‘ He never really saw me skate before this contest ,” Bufoni said of his father. ‘ When he took me to this competition he saw that I had potential and from there he took me to competitions and events. He started taking me to the skatepark every day, and he became my biggest supporter . ‘
At 14, she moved to Los Angeles and considered the Californian city the center of the skate world. Los Angeles has featured in many of the skateboarding videos she’s watched and many of the top brands were based there. “It’s all set in Los Angeles and it was always my dream city,” she says. “You skate with the best pros and skate with the best skateparks.”
In fact, the city was the catalyst for his skate career and success. Her confidence grew, but when she looked around her home country, sponsorship opportunities seemed scarce. The year before moving to Los Angeles, Bufoni wondered if she could really make it as a skateboarder. “I didn’t have any sponsors and I came to a point where I was like, ‘Should I keep doing this or focus on school? “Although her father continued to support her, Bufoni feared that her family’s financial resources were running out.
Bufoni’s ticket to Los Angeles came in 2007 with an invitation to compete in the X Games. Her father traveled with her and paid for their expenses. Once there, Bufoni knew she had to find a way to stay. Her eighth place finish at the X Games street event hinted at her future promise, but she still needed to convince her father, who was reluctant to allow his young daughter to move so far from home. After weeks of cajoling, he gave in.
With her family back in Brazil, Bufoni had to settle in Los Angeles on her own, but she was helped by a Brazilian photographer based in Los Angeles, Ana Paula Negrao , who specializes in skate photo shoots.
Learning English was a struggle for Bufoni at first. “It was really hard to learn it coming from Portuguese,” she says. In what was to become a familiar pattern, Bufoni persevered. She wanted to skateboard professionally and she believed she could make it in Los Angeles.
