Lena Gieseke is a German special effects technician, painter and academic best known as the first and only wife of American filmmaker, artist, author and animator Tim Burton. Lena is from Bremen, her interest in art developed at an early age. She reportedly attended the German School in Athens before later enrolling at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and pursuing studies in fine art and photography.

She met her husband at a party in London and they exchanged their wedding vows in February 1987. The couple were married for four years and had no children together.

Between 2000 and 2004, she attended Universität Koblenz for a Bachelor of Science. She went on to earn a Masters in Dramatic Arts from the University of Georgia in 2007. In 2012, she joined Universität Stuttgart’s Digital Media Doctoral Program as a student to earn a Ph.D. degree. Gieseke has been on the visual effects teams for several movies, including ‘2012’ and ‘Immortals’. Currently, she is Professor of Visual Media Technologies at Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF Film University.
