JAMB Sets Minimum Cut-Off Mark for 2023/24 Admissions
The JAMB registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede announced that Nigerian universities have reached a consensus on setting the minimum benchmark for admissions in the upcoming 2023/2024 academic session at 140.
Recall that, at the 2022 JAMB policy meeting, universities were granted the authority to establish individual cut-off marks for their respective candidates.
While some institutions have begun proposing their own cut-off marks, several notable universities have suggested higher benchmarks. The University of Jos and the Federal University of Technology proposed 180, while the University of Ibadan, University of Benin, and University of Lagos recommended 200 each, among others.
Among the universities surveyed, the Pan-Atlantic University, located in Lagos State, has set the highest benchmark at 220. However, approximately 15 universities, primarily in the private sector, advocated for a reduction in the benchmark to 120 but their proposal was dismissed.
On the other hand, it was also determined that a minimum score of 100 would serve as the admission benchmark for polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

JAMB Reveals Most Competitive Universities in Nigeria
In a recent presentation during the 2023 policy meeting, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, revealed that the University of Ilorin and the University of Lagos emerged as the most sought-after universities during the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
The ranking was based on the number of applicants each university attracted during the application period for the 2023 UTME. The University of Ilorin secured the top spot, making it the most desired institution for aspiring students. Following closely behind, the University of Lagos claimed the second position, solidifying its popularity among prospective candidates.
Other universities that made it into the top 10 list include the Lagos State University, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, University of Benin, University of Nigeria, Obafemi Awolowo University, Nnamdi Azikwe University, Nigerian Defence Academy, and the University of Ibadan. These institutions showcased their prominence by drawing a substantial number of candidates during the UTME application period.
JAMB Considers Use of Mobile Phones for UTME and DE
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Examinations (JAMB) has announced its intention to introduce a “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) initiative for the Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examinations and the Direct Entry Examinations.
According to Oloyede, the initiative aims to allow candidates to use their mobile phones to take the exams, reducing the board’s expenditure. The presentation also highlighted measures to combat exam malpractice, including the establishment of a mobile exam malpractice tribunal and collaboration with security agencies to address cybercrimes.
Additionally, efforts will be made to encourage digital literacy and deter cheating through open book examinations and the adoption of a single identity for all candidates using the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) system.
JAMB Fixes Post-UTME Screening Fee at N2,000
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that the fee for post-UTME screening will be set at N2,000. This decision was disclosed by JAMB’s registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, during the 2023 policy meeting held at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja.
According to Prof. Oloyede, any educational institution interested in conducting screening exercises can proceed, but the screening process cost should not exceed N2,000 per candidate. Additionally, JAMB has imposed a strict regulation that prohibits institutions from imposing any extra charges on candidates, including administrative and bank fees, in relation to the screening exercises.
Furthermore, JAMB aims to ensure the integrity of the examination process by providing free access to photo images and fingerprint data of candidates to all institutions. This initiative aims to curb the substitution of candidates who did not sit for the examinations.
