Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first public tertiary health institution in Nigeria to carry out Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) closure. VSD closure is a heart procedure that involves closing a hole between the left and right ventricles of the heart. The successful procedure took place on June 20, 2023, at LASUTH’s Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory.
Dr. Oluwaseye Oladimeji, a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at LASUTH, shared the news on Twitter on June 27, 2023. He explained that the procedure is performed on individuals who are born with a hole in their heart. There are two ways to address this condition: open heart surgery or non-surgical closure. The non-surgical closure involves using a disc-like device to close the defect without making an incision in the chest wall. Patients who undergo this procedure can be discharged just two hours after completion.
