Lawrence Harvey ‘Larry’ Brown was born on September 14, 1940 to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York, where he spent most of his childhood playing basketball.

Larry attended Long Beach High School where he was active in basketball and later joined the University of North Carolina where he played for the varsity team. In 1963, Larry announced that he was ready to be drafted in the 1963 NBA draft. Therefore, the Baltimore Bullets selected him in the seventh round with the 55th overall pick. He began playing point guard for the ABA’s New Orleans Buccaneers in 1967. He left the Buccaneers in 1968 for the ABA’s Oakland Oaks/Washington Caps/Virginia Squires. He played with the Oaks until 1971. Brown went on to play for the ABA’s Denver Rockets and left in 1972. He had a good ABA career with 4,229 points, 1,005 rebounds, and 2,509 total assists. Brown went on to play with the 1964 Summer Olympics team, winning a gold medal.

Brown began working as a coach in 1972. He coached the ABA’s Carolina Cougars until 1974 and left for the ABA and NBA’s Denver Nuggets. In 1979 he began coaching the UCLA Bruins and took them to new heights. Later in 1981, Brown switched to the New Jersey Nets, after which he coached the Kansas Jayhawks until 1989. Brown later signed on as the coach of the San Antonio Spurs until 1992. He then went on to coach the Los Angeles Clippers until 1993. Indiana Pacers was next in his long coaching career. He continued to coach the Philadelphia 76ers until 2003 and then moved to the Detroit Pistons. He left the Pistons in 2005 and began coaching the New York Knicks until 2006. Brown went on to coach the Charlotte Bobcats until 2010 and then chose the SMU Mustangs.

Brown is notable for being the only coach in basketball history to win both an NCAA national championship and an NBA title. His lifetime professional coaching record stands at 1,275-965 in the ABA and NBA. Not only that, Brown is also the only coach in NBA history to lead eight different teams to the playoffs and the only player to coach two NBA franchises in the same season.

Brown married Shelly Brown in 1993. The lovely couple have been inseparable ever since. They have 4 children named Madison Brown, Alli Brown, LJ Brown, and Kristen Brown who are very active in their own fields.
