Lagos Government Announces Eko Bridge Closure for Repairs
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to close and divert traffic on Eko Bridge to allow for emergency repairs by the Federal Ministry of Works.
This project will begin next week Monday, September 16, and will last for 18 weeks, with the bridge reopening in the second week of February 2025.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, shared this update in a statement on Friday.
He explained that the repairs will be conducted in four phases. The bridge will be “intermittently fully or partially closed, depending on the work schedule.”
Alternative Routes for Motorists
To ease the expected traffic disruptions, Osiyemi released a travel advisory, suggesting several alternative routes.
For motorists heading to Lagos Island from Funsho Williams Avenue, using the service lane at Alaka to connect to Costain and access Eko Bridge is recommended.
This will help them continue their journeys with minimal delays. Alternatively, they can use Costain directly to connect to Eko Bridge and reach Apongbon.
Another option for motorists traveling to Lagos Island is to connect to Apongbon through Eko Bridge, then link back to Costain to access Funsho Williams Avenue.
Additionally, motorists can go through Apapa Road from Costain and link to Oyingbo, then access Adekunle to connect to the Third Mainland Bridge.
For those heading to Surulere, Osiyemi suggested using Costain to link Breweries, then proceed to Abebe Village and connect to Eric Moore/Bode Thomas. This route will ensure smooth access to their final destinations.
LASTMA Officers to Manage Traffic
To reduce travel delays and inconvenience, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to the affected areas and along the alternative routes.
Osiyemi assured residents that “LASTMA officers will be stationed at the rehabilitation areas and alternative routes to minimize travel delays and inconvenience.”
