The Lagos State House of Assembly has raised an alarm over the growing threat posed by miscreants harassing and robbing road users across the state, urging security agencies to step up patrols and crack down on the criminals.

During Tuesday’s plenary, lawmaker Sanni Okanlawon (Kosofe I) brought the issue to the floor, describing the rising wave of attacks and intimidation on commuters as deeply troubling. He warned that if the trend continues unchecked, it could jeopardize public safety across the state.

“The situation is getting out of hand. These criminals lurk on our roads, harassing innocent people and stealing their belongings,” Okanlawon said. “We can’t afford to let Lagos become unsafe.”

Backing the motion, Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho II) said the presence of miscreants had become commonplace, calling for the police and neighborhood security operatives to intensify surveillance.

Desmond Elliot also weighed in, urging that known black spots across Lagos be constantly monitored. He also called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to team up with other security agencies to tackle drug abuse, which he said fuels much of the violence.

Aro Moshood added that some of the miscreants disguise themselves as roadside helpers, especially during vehicle breakdowns, only to turn around and extort or attack drivers.

The Assembly unanimously resolved to summon the State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, and direct the Lagos Neighbourhood Watch to take urgent steps to boost security and restore confidence among road users.

Meanwhile, in another matter raised at the session, Gbolahan Yishawu called for a quarterly review of the 2025 budget to ensure Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) remain accountable.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa directed the Committees on Budget and Economic Planning to follow up on the review and report back to the House.
