JUST IN: Labour Party promises to implement N100,000 Minimum Wage
  •  Labour party has promised to increase the minimum wage to N80,000-N100,000
  • Peter Obi has also promised to curtail the ASUU strike if elected

Labour Party said if it wins the presidential election next year, the party promises to enact a minimum wage of N80,000 to N100,000.

After much anticipation, the Labour Party recently unveiled its platform, with presidential candidate Peter Obi praising hourly pay as an improvement over the nation’s current monthly system.

Ayo Olorunfemi, the party’s deputy national chairman, said the LP is considering adopting a new minimum salary of between N80,000 and N100,000 as opposed to the N30,000 that is now available on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

“It depends on the nature of the job that would be given out. For instance, when you take a cursory look at the manual laborer out there, he does not take less than N2,500-N3,000 per day which is still not okay as far as the reward system is concerned. If you divide N3,000 by six hours, you will be talking about N500 per hour,” he said on the show.

“So, when you benchmark that against what we have now, certainly, you would be talking of something within the range of N500-N1,000 per hour depending on the nature of work, and at the end of the day, someone can effectively say that he can make up to N4,000 in a day. And when you multiply N4,000 in a day by 20 or 25, we are talking about N80,000 or N100,000 in a month.”

The LP chieftain said, “That is exactly where we are headed!” when prompted to elaborate on his remark, saying that the party is targeting “N80,000-N100,000” as a new monthly minimum salary.

“As a matter of fact, you know the amount of oil in the name of oil theft that has been leaving this country,” Mr. Olorufemi added. “We know where these things are coming from. They say there is no money but we know these monies have been stashed in the rooms or toilets of a few persons.”

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Tuesday said that the Academic Staff Union of Universities won’t go on strike if he becomes the next president of the country.

Obi speaking at a state rally in Owerri, Imo State, said that his administration would dialogue with ASUU leadership to ensure that universities won’t be locked.
The LP presidential candidate said his administration would work with students and invest hugely in education, health, and agriculture.

Obi also reiterated his commitment to providing jobs and turning the country from consumption to production, adding that he and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, had clean records in academics and public service.

He added that the people of Imo State could begin to export palm seeds if he becomes the next president. The ex-Anambra State governor said that rural people across the country would feel the impact of his administration if he wins the February 25 presidential election.

Obi said, “If you make me your president and Datti my vice, ASUU won’t go on strike. We will dialogue with them. We will work with the students. The future of any serious country is dependent on its education and health sectors. I will invest hugely in those sectors if you elect us.

“We want to go back to Agriculture. That is why we want to turn Nigeria from consumption to production. We will create jobs and export, export, and export.
“I and Datti are not corrupt. Our records are clean.

“Datti was a senator and I was a governor in Anambra. If you want to check my record, go to Anambra State and verify.
“As the governor of Anambra state, I didn’t allocate a plot of land to myself, my wife here or my children. If you see any land I allocated to myself or any member of my family I will quit this race,” he added.
