KRISTOFER HIVJU ON TWITTER

Interviewer: It’s not often that I get the chance to talk to someone who I don’t know is actually alive or dead. How is Tormund?

Kristofer Hivju: Well, isn’t that the mystery? I do not know! [Laughs.] The last time I saw it, I was inside a wall, hundreds of meters of ice collapsing!

Interviewer: When season four premiered a few years ago, HBO had a virtual reality experience where you went to the top of the wall. I remember thinking, ‘That’s a long way to go.’

Kristofer Hivju: It is, and I had that experience. It was cool to do this thing when we shot it, because I had this feeling of being on the wall. It was like that when we shot it.

Interviewer: It’s quite a compliment, in a way, that Tormund is the character who bears witness to this huge event.

Kristofer Hivju: He saw the dawn of the dead in Hardhome, so he’s been among them before, and he lost almost all of his people to them. I think it was a terrifying experience for him.

Interviewer: But even though he knows better than anyone what humanity is facing, he hasn’t lost his thirst for life.

Kristofer Hivju: No. It’s like Beric says, “Death is always the enemy, but you must always fight it.” There is another saying: ‘The show must go on.’ It also counts for life! We all have to die, but we still have to live the best life possible. I think Tormund has a very healthy brain! [Laughs.] He’s an optimist, after all, and that’s something I like about him too. Even in the darkest hour, he can find something positive to brag about!

Interviewer: If for no other reason, I hope he survived the fall so he could get back together with Brienne.

Kristofer Hivju: Yeah! Tormund is with you on that one!

Interviewer: Their relationship – if you can call it that – isn’t in the books, so it was a bit of unexpected humor amidst the chaos.

Kristofer Hivju: It’s like you say: in all this horror and the threat that they face, and as it becomes more and more tense, when there is a hint of love, it gives everyone a little of life! [Laughs.] What’s more important in the end than love, right?

Interviewer: One of the big themes of the show is putting aside differences to fight the common threat. As a savage who has made peace with Night’s Watch, Tormund lives the values that Jon and Davos preach.

Kristofer Hivju: Yes exactly. It’s something my mom told me today, actually, “Forgiveness is the hardest way to move forward, but it’s still the only one.” You have to turn the page and let the past pass. It’s nice to play a character who has that ability, because there’s so much revenge and the desire to kill each other in this series. It’s good to have a character who can turn the page and see the big picture. And it’s a must-have skill, because you have to adapt or else you’re lost.

Interviewer: Your mom makes an excellent point. Revenge is a major plot driver for a lot of storylines, but it’s not at all in Tormund’s mind.

Kristofer Hivju: No. His mentor and father figure was Mance Rayder, who gathered all of the Free Folk together to bring down the Night’s Watch and secure his people – but through war. It didn’t work out, and I think hopefully Tormund learned from his mentor’s mistakes. I’m thinking about the line [about Mance] that really surprised me when I got there, in episode six, when Tormund says to Jon, ‘How many died for his pride because he didn’t is not kneeling?” It’s a perspective I didn’t see coming from him.

Interviewer: Was that consistent with what you know about Tormund as a person?

Kristofer Hivju: Definitely, because it comes after he started cooperating with Jon. They are like a team now. They could have been that from the start, rather than later. It just shows that he’s flexible and doesn’t want to kill anyone anymore. He just wants to survive and make a good place for his people. But now, who knows? He is in the air.

Interviewer: Yeah, literally, saw how far it should fall. How was this collapse of shooting? It was so effect-heavy that I’m curious what it’s like to be an actor under those circumstances.

Kristofer Hivju: Well, they built a fantastic set from the top of the wall. We had real crows, real birds. And it was pretty cold in that studio. But you know, because I’ve seen the army of the dead, I know what it’s like to imagine it. Of course, when a giant zombie dragon comes at you with the Night King on it, it’s not that easy! But I have so many pictures stuck in my head watching the show that it’s still easy to imagine.

Interviewer: There haven’t been dragons in Westeros for hundreds of years. There has never been a zombie dragon. How can a guy like Tormund, who has a pretty down-to-earth sensibility, fit all of these amazing things into his worldview?

Kristofer Hivju: I don’t know – he didn’t have much time to think about that. He saw the thing start to tear down the wall, and I think his desperation and desperation is the only thing he can think of. This is definitely an “all is lost” moment.

Interviewer: The cast has yet to see the scripts for next season. Assuming you survive, what would you like to see next?

Kristofer Hivju: I want to see more love, man! [Laughs.]
