1. While studying at Yale University , he worked as a practice room monitor at the Yale School of Music .
2. His musical talent was discovered by his parents when he was 6 months old. They decided to send him to music lessons.
3. When he was 4 years old he started learning the piano. He began taking cello lessons at the age of 6 and learned the alto saxophone at the age of 10.
4. In his hometown of Owensboro, he was involved in community music programs and was a member of a jazz band, concert band, marching band, and community youth orchestra.
5. At age 12, he was selected to be the United States Collegiate Wind Band ‘s principal saxophonist. During the summer he toured Europe with the band for three weeks.
6. In his youth he also served as principal cellist with the Kentucky State Youth Orchestra . He also received top honors from the Kentucky Governors School for the Arts .
7. After winning at the American Fine Arts Festival , he was invited to perform in the piano trio at Carnegie Hall .
8. Scott Hoying contacted him about an opening in his music group. Pentatonix . Hoying was impressed by Kevin’s video Julie-O , which had gone viral on social media.
9. After his musical group won the reality TV competition, The Sing-Off, they landed a record deal with Sony Music and received a $200,000 cash prize.
