Recently, there has been a growing concern about the possibility of Kenya passing anti-LGBTQ legislation, following in the footsteps of Uganda. One of Kenya’s most prominent members of parliament, Mohamed Ali, strongly opposes homosexuality, claiming it to be a Western invention forced upon the continent. He accuses openly gay Africans of being dishonest and seeking personal gain by lying about their sexuality.
The proposed law to be reformed and submitted to the parliament is named the “Family Protection Bill” in Kenya and bears similarities to the draconian anti-LGBTQ law recently enacted in Uganda. Under the proposed legislation, engaging in gay sex could lead to imprisonment, and in some cases, even death.
Additionally, supporters and other legislatures who have thrown their support at these laws argue that they are necessary to protect African values and sovereignty, which they believe have been undermined by Western pressure to embrace gay rights. However, critics view these bills as hateful and oppressive, warning that they would make life unbearable for queer individuals in these countries.
