Ken Block was born on the 21st of November 1967 as Kenneth Paul Block in Long Beach California. Very little is known about his childhood and life before becoming a rally driver. A few publications noted that he attended Orange Glen High School and Palomar College.
Block began his national rally career in 2005, joining the Vermont SportsCar team. He received a 2005 Subaru WRX STi with which he participated in his very first event, the Sno*Drift in Michigan. In that race, he managed seventh place overall and fifth place in the Group N class.
Block ensured a top-five finish in the top five in the 2005 rally season, placing thus finishing third in Group A and fourth in the national Rally America championship, earning him the title of Rally America Rookie of the Year. The following year, Block competed in his first X Games rally at X Games XII where he won bronze finishing third.
At the 2006 Rally America National Championship, he finished second overall, as the general public began to realize his remarkable driving abilities. Block maintained his performance in 2007, with 19 podiums and 8 overall wins in rallies around the world.
