Adetiba was born on  January 8, 1980, in Lagos State, Nigeria. She was born to Nigerian parents (Dele & Mayen Adetiba). Her father, Dele is a renowned media maestro in the advertising industry while her mother (Mayen Adetiba) was an actress who later took up a career in civil engineering.

Education

Kemi Adetiba is one of the Nollywood giants who deviated from their initial course of study to pursue a career in filmmaking. She studied Law at the University of Lagos, in Lagos State Nigeria where she bagged a LLB Hons.

After deciding to major as a filmmaker, Adetiba enrolled at the New York Film Academy where she took a course to hone her skills.

Career

The popular movie director was introduced to Tv at a very tender age, courtesy of her father. She headlined two national Tv commercials and that was Adetiba’s stepping stone into the world of media, arts, and entertainment.

Kemi started her career as a radio presenter at Rhythm Fm Lagos where she was popularly known for her shows “Soul’d Out” and “Sunday at the Seaside”. Later on, she worked as a Tv presenter and producer. Some of her notable Tv works include Studio 53, Temptation Nigeria, and Maltina Dance All. 

As a film director, her works have been appreciated both within and outside Nigeria. Her short film “Across a Bloodied Ocean”, was screened at the Pan African Film Festival and the National Black Arts Festival as far back as 2009.

Later in 2015, her first feature film “The Wedding Party” premiered on the opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The movie was a high-grossing film in the first year of its release and Adetiba bagged a lot of accolades for it.

Although she had been in the spotlight as a music video director and movie director long before the release of The Wedding Party, the film saw her rise to more prominence.

Adetiba’s high-grossing 2021 film, King of Boys, and its sequel are still much-talked-about movies within and outside Nigeria today. King of Boys is one of the best Nollywood movies on Netflix and has many awards to show for it.
