Honda started his youth career from his home club called Settsu in the year 1994. In 1999, he moved to Gamba Osaka for two seasons and joined Seiryo High School in the year 2002. He played for Seiryo for two seasons.
In 2005, Honda made its debut on the professional soccer field of the Nagoya Grampus club. He spent two seasons at this club appearing in 90 games with 11 goals. After his experience at this club, Honda signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Eredivisie club VVV-Venlo in 2008, making 68 appearances and scoring 24 goals.
In his first 6 months at VVV, he experienced relegation as the club was relegated to the second division from the first. But by scoring 16 goals in 36 league games, Honda helped the team back up his position in the top division, earning him the name “Keizer Keisuke” (Emperor Keisuke) among his fans.
