KEBBI: Residents flee as flood ravages 10 communities

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that severe flooding has displaced residents in ten communities across Kebbi State, following continuous heavy rainfall.

The disaster, which occurred between September 17 and 22, has left more than 2,000 people homeless, with many fleeing to safer areas.

Mr. Aliyu Shehu-Kafindagi, Head of Operations of NEMA’s Sokoto office, led a joint assessment team to the affected areas on Wednesday.

He stated, “The incident, which occurred between Sept. 17 and 22, was caused by heavy rainfall and the coming of more water from River Niger, which led some communities to be submerged and inundated by the water.”

Shehu-Kafindagi added that the affected communities include Kunda, Dala-Maidawa, Dala-Tudu, Dala-Mairuwa, Ishe-Mairuwa, Kwarkusa, Kurmudi, Tugar Maigani, Tukur Cika, Uguwar Gwada, Uguwar Wakili, and Gundu.

“10 communities were affected in the Shanga local government,” he noted.

Most of the displaced people are fishermen who also lost large areas of farmland.

Shehu-Kafindagi explained, “Many hectares of rice, maize, millet, beans, and guinea corn, among others, have been submerged.”

During the assessment, the team discovered that over 300 people had taken refuge at an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Tudun Faila Primary School.

NEMA’s joint assessment was conducted in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), local officials, and security operatives.

The flood has devastated these communities, forcing residents to flee and leaving behind significant damage to homes and farmland.

“The situation is dire, and the residents are in urgent need of assistance,” Shehu-Kafindagi emphasized.
