- During his childhood he loved to play baseball. In fact, he was on his middle school baseball team.
- He was first introduced to professional wrestling after one of his older brothers borrowed a New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) video game from his friend.
- During his childhood he was an excellent sprinter and was part of the middle school team. He had even managed to win a regional 100-meter event and was being courted by high school recruiters.
- When he turned 14, he realized that he wanted to be a professional wrestler.
- At the beginning of his wrestling career, he received his wrestling education at Toryumon professional wrestling school under the direction of Último Dragón. He was later trained by Yuji Nagata.
- In January 2010, NJPW announced that they would be sending Okada on a development trip to the United States to train with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) . He then wrestled for TNA for a couple of years.
- In February 2012 he won the coveted IWGP Heavyweight Championship for the first time in his career. His first tenure as heavyweight champion lasted about 125 days.
- In January 2013, it was rumored that he would be joining WWE. However, he released a statement to refute all these rumors and instead revealed that he had signed the new contract with NJPW.
- Although he had only recently signed another one-year extension, Takaaki Kidani, the owner of NJPW, announced in December 2015 that they were ready to scrap a one-year contract and face Okada with a new five-year contract worth 200 million yen to make by NJPW.
- In October 2017, he became the first wrestler in NJPW history to officiate as the IWGP Heavyweight Champion for more than 489 days. This was Shinya Hashimoto’s previous record.
- In January 2018, he set another NJPW record of his own, spanning 1,358 days.
- In 2018, he became the first NJPW wrestler to successfully complete 12 title defenses in one reign. The previous record was 11 and was owned by Hiroshi Tanahashi.
- In May 2014, he was featured in the music video of Pharrell Williams’ song Happy .
- In August 2014, he founded Rainmaker Kikin (Rainmaker Fund) to raise money for childhood cancer treatment. He was motivated to start the fund after his uncle and cousin were diagnosed with cancer.
- Okada has publicly pledged to donate ¥30,000 (equivalent to $378) to the Rainmaker Fund for every wrestling match he wins.
