The story behind the tragic incident of the youngest girl with a face transplant
On March 5, 2014, when Katie was 18, she shot herself in the face with a .308 caliber hunting rifle. She was in her bathroom when she tried to kill herself because her boyfriend was cheating on her.
Robert (Katie’s brother) heard the sound of gunshots and immediately ran to his sister’s bathroom. He found her lying on the ground and covered in blood all over her face. Her family took her to the hospital in Oxford, Mississippi and she saved her daughter’s life. Later, her daughter was taken to a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Unfortunately, she survived but was severely injured. Her face was gone. Katie lost her forehead, nose, jaw bones, mouth, sinuses, and the front of her face. In fact, her eyes were also seriously injured. During an interview, she said that she never thought of taking her own life. She felt guilty that she had put her family through so much pain and she felt horrible.
A surgeon suggested to Katie’s parents that they consider a face transplant. She then checked herself into the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Her transplant was the fourth face transplant in Cleveland and the 40th in the world.
The brave journey of the Stubblefield family
In May 2017, the clinic found a donor, Andrea Schneider. She was a 31-year-old woman who had recently passed away and was the perfect match for Katie’s face transplant. Andrea’s grandmother, Sandra Bennington, made the decision to donate Andrea’s face.
The National Geographic followed Katie’s brave three-year journey. She received a 31 hour long operation to make the surgery a success. The surgery was paid for by the US Department of Defense through the Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

Before the operation, surgeons used 3D printing to reconstruct 90% of his lower jaw. Dr. Brian Gastman led the successful plastic surgery and gave the beautiful girl a whole new face. In fact, the surgery was performed by all 11 surgeons. They are capable of curing the main functions of her face, that is, chewing, breathing and swallowing.
