Kate Mulgrew was born as Katherine Kiernan Maria Mulgrew on April 29, 1955 in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. She is of Caucasian ethnicity/race and has an American nationality.
Mulgrew is the eldest daughter in an Irish Catholic family of eight children. Her parents were Thomas James Mulgrew, a contractor, and her mother, Joan Virginia Mulgrew, an artist and painter.
Mulgrew completed his elementary education at Wahlert High School in Dubuque. Then, at age 17, he enrolled at New York University. . However, Mulgrew left NYU after one year and began working as a waitress.

Mulgrew later married a Democratic politician, Tim Hagan in 1999. The couple stayed together for almost 15 years, then separated.
Mulgrew then married a second time to Robert H. Egan in 1982. They have two sons, Alexander James and Ian Thomas Egan. They were living a happy life together unless they called off their marriage for personal reasons.
