Born on January 6, 1931 in Osaka, Yachigusa began her career in the Takarazuka Revue women’s drama troupe. She made her film debut in 1951 as a minor in the forgotten drama Takarazuka fujin . The big break in her career came when she was cast to lead the cast of Samurai, opposite Toshiro Mifune , who played legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. She kicked off a trilogy from director Hiroshi Inagaki.

The following year, Kaoru Yachigusa married Senkichi Taniguchi , who was by her side until she died in 2007 at age 95. Taniguchi was a screenwriter and director, and also a friend and frequent collaborator of Akira Kurosawa , the most renowned director of Japanese cinema.

The actress continued shooting throughout her life at the rate of at least one feature film a year, although most of them hardly had an impact outside of her country. She never retired, because until she was diagnosed with her illness, a year before her death, she was part of the cast of Butler Saionji’s Great Reasoning, a successful television series.
