Biography
The son of former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau and his wife Margaret, Justin Trudeau was born on Christmas Day in 1971 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. His parents divorced in 1984 after divorcing when he was five. Eventually, the couple reached a shared custody agreement and stayed amicable. Trudeau has two half-siblings named Kyle and Alicia as a result of his mother’s wedding to Fried Kemper. His father’s connection with Deborah Coyne gave him a half-sister called Sarah as well.
Trudeau received his early education at Rockcliffe Park Public School before transferring to the exclusive Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf and Lycée Claudel d’Ottawa. He originally attended McGill University, where he graduated with a BA in literature, before continuing his career at the University of British Columbia, where he graduated with a degree in education. Trudeau continued his engineering studies at the École Polytechnique de Montréal, although he never received a degree. He then started a master’s program at McGill but left to pursue a political career.
Career
At the start of his career, Trudeau taught math and French full-time at West Point Grey Academy while also filling in as a substitute teacher at several Vancouver schools.
Political Career, 2000-2011
After his father’s demise, Trudeau grew more and more interested in the Liberal Party of Canada. He participated in leadership conferences and was chosen in 2006 to lead a task committee on youth rejuvenation. The next year, Trudeau won the nomination for the Liberal Party in Papineau. He then defeated Vivian Barbot in the general election. Trudeau entered the Canadian Parliament as a member of the Official Opposition in 2008, the year the Conservative Party secured a minority government. In that capacity, he promoted multiculturalism and youth rights. In Papineau, Trudeau won reelection to office in the 2011 federal election.
Head of the Liberal Party
Late in 2012, Trudeau declared his intention to run for Liberal Party president. In the end, he easily defeated rivals Marc Garneau, Martha Hall Findlay, and Joyce Murray to win the election in 2013. The Cannabis Act, which legalized recreational marijuana, the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, the creation of a federal carbon tax, the negotiation of significant trade agreements, and the signing of the Paris Agreement to combat climate change were just a few of the initiatives Trudeau undertook during his first term. Trudeau guided the Liberal Party to minority administrations in 2019 and 2021. During those two years, he managed the administration’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak and established a ban on assault-style firearms. In reaction to the Freedom Convoy demonstrations against COVID-19 safety regulations, among other significant acts, Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act in 2022.
