The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Her name will be sent to President Bola Tinubu today (Friday) for his approval. This comes after the NJC’s 106th meeting, presided over by the outgoing CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who recommended Justice Kekere-Ekun for the position.
According to NJC Director of Information, Soji Oye, “The meeting just finished yesterday, so today is when My Lord’s name will be taken to the President for his approval of her as the next CJN.
He further explained that since the meeting had already been concluded, the next step was sending Justice Kekere-Ekun’s name to the President for approval
Oye also stated, “The council also recommended 27 candidates for appointment as judges of states’ courts and a candidate for appointment as Kadi of the Sharia Court of the FCT, Abuja to their various state governors and Mr. President.”
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment is crucial as Justice Ariwoola will formally retire on August 22, 2024.
If approved, she will become the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, after Justice Mariam Mukhtar, who held the position from July 2012 to November 2014.
