While speaking with newsmen, Anthony Adeyinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Sports to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, commended operatives of the Lagos State Police Command over their handling of the June 12 protest in the state.

According to him, the police use the method to disperse hoodlums, who wanted to hijack the protest at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in the Ojota area in Lagos State.

When asked to comment on why the police fired tear gas and gunshots at the Gani Fawehinmi Park, the governor’s aide said: “I was impressed with the way the police handled that situation, it was not the activists, it was the hoodlums that wanted to hijack that protest.

“The people were at Ojota peacefully. The activists were addressing themselves that what they want is a peaceful demonstration but the hoodlums, the miscreants as we all know them wanted to hijack the peaceful demonstration but the police rose to that occasion and made sure the thing was put in order.”

“The youths in Lagos are ready to work in synergy with the state government. The last thing that happened during the #EndSARS showed how hoodlums hijacked a proposed peaceful protest but we give thanks to God that the youths are able to come together and work together with the governor and make sure there is peace in the state.”

Meanwhile, in another news the Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu says June 12 is a date that will never be forgotten in Nigeria. In his statement, Sanwo-Olu said it marked what the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola stood for and fought for.

The governor regretted that the day was when the country’s democracy and the freedom to choose a leader was challenged.

He observed Nigerians have realized there is no alternative to democracy, which guarantees the freedom of expression, movement, and people’s choice to choose their leaders.

“June 12, a day which has come to stay, is when we will continue to remember and celebrate as our Democracy Day.

“How well have we kept to the tenets of real and true democracy? What are the challenges that are still facing us as people? Are we truly running a free and true democracy? The answers are left in each and every one of us.”
