Julianna trains with her coach and personal trainer Luiz Claudio, who runs his own martial arts academy called LCCT Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Pena trains with a mix of high-intensity cardio sessions aimed at improving her endurance and exercises aimed at developing explosive strength and bodyweight exercises to improve endurance and speed.

Her training regime also has its fair share of exercises aimed at strengthening her core. However, instead of relying on sit-ups, she does lateral rotation exercises. In addition, she also does shadow boxing and other exercises aimed at repetition in game situations.

When it comes to nutrition, she believes that fueling the body immediately before and after a workout is key to muscle recovery. For a pre-workout meal, she prefers carbohydrates with a low to moderate blood sugar index, as these keep her blood sugar levels stable. Her favorite pre-workout meal is chicken breast with roasted sweet potatoes, garlic broccoli, and caramelized onions.

  1. In February 2012, while walking in downtown Spokane, she was struck by a drunk driver in a horrific accident. She had a broken nose and was beaten unconscious.
  2. In 2013, before her match against Jessica Andrade at UFC 171, she suffered a serious knee injury that damaged the knee meniscus, ACL, LCL, and MCL and kept her out of action for a year.
  3. In December 2015, Pena was arrested by Spokane authorities on two counts of assault. After a fight, Pena and Josh Gow had attempted to enter a bar, but when refused, Pena attacked bar employees as well as the bar owner.
  4. In January 2016, during the assault hearing, the district judge made a provision that if she was not involved in such incidents for a year, the case would be dismissed.
  5. In 2013 she was awarded Mixed Martial Arts Comeback of the Year.
