INTERVIEW WITH JULIAN MORRIS
WHY ACTOR JULIAN MORRIS WAS AWAY FROM ‘PRETTY LITTLE LIARS’

Tell me about Hand of God.
JULIAN MORRIS: Hand of God is something that excites me a lot. It’s a new show for Amazon, written by Mark Forster and featuring Ron Pearlman and myself. It’s a dark tale of revenge with these despicable characters who are, deep down, very human. But as despicable as they are, I think we can relate to their situation. I play an actor-turned-crook-turned-preacher on a mission to sell out a mega-church in California. Then I see my number one prey, the person who is going to help facilitate that is the character of Ron Pearlman. So I’m doing everything I can to get every dollar I can from him. And in doing so, take us both down a rabbit hole to encourage him to do all the bad things he shouldn’t be doing.
You have been playing for a long time, both in your native England and here.
JM : My first acting gig was when I was 12. I played this kid pushed into the LSD business on this TV show called The Knock in Britain. Then from there I got the chance to play the young roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company, which is an incredible foundation of incredible actors. But, at this point in my life, I wasn’t like, ‘This is my career. I am an actor.’ I think you have to earn this title. I always try to earn it. At the time, it was just fun: “That’s what I like to do after school.”
At 18, you had to make the ultimate choice between school and acting, right?
JM: Yeah, so that choice was, I had a place in college to read English. I was on a gap year and had all these travel plans. I love animals, so I was going to Namibia to be a game warden. I couldn’t wait, then I had a meeting with an agent in London and I asked the guy, ‘I want to keep playing, what should I do?’ and he said, ‘Look, I’m going to rep you right now, let’s see how it goes.’ And within a month, I had a lead in an NBC pilot. So, I did the pilot, and then there’s this time frame where NBC decides whether to pick it up or not and during that time I had to decide, “Okay, what do I want to do? Do I want to pursue this acting thing and go to Los Angeles or stay and go to university and do what I should probably do? ‘ And of course I didn’t.
So you moved to LA?
JM : Well, I visited LA, had the time of my life, and then the pilot didn’t happen. I had said no to college and couldn’t go back, so I was like, ‘I’m royally f-ked now.’ And then I met Steven Daldry on the train. You know, he managed Billy Elliot, and I had this heart to heart with him and his advice was just, “Follow your heart, go for it.” So, I went out in January and stayed on my agent’s couch. I had my first gig in the United States, directed by Jim Nelson, who produced Kevin Costner’s Dances with Wolves and won an Oscar for it. […] Then I found myself in Pretty Little Liars and Once Upon a Time, which was really great.
