Juan Antonio Porto
Scriptwriter of emblematic titles of Spanish cinema such as “El bosque del lobo”, Juan Antonio Porto also worked as a teacher for a long time. The Galician filmmaker passed away on February 16, 2021, at the age of 84, in Madrid.
Born on January 10, 1937 in La Coruña, Juan Antonio Porto graduated from the Official School of Cinematography. After writing and directing several shorts, he made his feature film debut writing El bosque del lobo , by Pedro Olea , with whom he also collaborated on La casa sin fronteras .
He worked under the orders of Pilar MIró in Beltenebros –Silver Bear at the Berlin Festival– and El crimen de Cuenca and for Gonzalo Suárez in his version of La regenta , from 1975. For television he wrote the series La forja de un rebelde .
He worked as a professor for thirty years, at the Faculty of Information Sciences, of the Complutense University of Madrid, and later at the Film School of the Community of Madrid (ECAM). Juan Antonio Porto became very familiar to fans of the Seventh Art for being a regular guest on the program “Qué grande es el cine!”, directed and presented by José Luis Garci . Author of numerous essays on cinematographic subjects, he retired from cinema in 2009, after The Conspiracy of El Escorial.
In February 2009, the Spanish Council of Ministers awarded him the Gold Medal for merit in Fine Arts. In 2014, the Faculty of Information Sciences paid tribute to him with the publication of the book “A scriptwriter at the university”.
