- He was not a healthy baby at birth, with deformed legs that curled inward. After doctors made his mother’s decision, they broke his leg bones and put the bones back in place so they could grow straight.
- His father, Kevin Robinson, left Josh’s family when he was a toddler and had no conversation with his father until he was 11.
- Growing up, no one expected him to play basketball at a higher level, even though he had the skills required. He was clumsy and had no control over his body.
- He was chosen by his high school coach, Napoleon Cloud, for his temperament, desire, and love of the game. Cloud felt that eventually he would develop his playing and technical skills.
- In 2003, he was selected by the Dallas Mavericks commission as the last pick in the first round. It has been claimed that his admission of pot smoking caused teams to stay away from him.
- During his school years, he was twice awarded the Frank Spencer Prize, reserved for the top player from Northwest North Carolina .
- The day before he went for the SAT, he was handcuffed outside a gas station when undercover officers mistakenly assumed Howard and his friends were selling drugs.
- In his senior year of high school, he was named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Year.
- He is the second ACC player after David Thompson to have 500 rebounds, 200 assists, 200 steals, 100 three pointers, 100 blocks and 1000 points.
