- He lived down the street from another MLB player, Aledmys Diaz, and they were good friends.
- Jose once stated that Diaz’s uncle was one of the most influential people in his life, especially when it comes to becoming a professional baseball player.
- Fernandez’s stepfather, Ramon, relocated from Cuba to Tampa, Florida in 2005. He attempted to renounce allegiance from Cuba in order to obtain allegiance from the US, which was improper from the first country. This resulted in him being sentenced to prison every time he attempted to emigrate from Cuba.
- Jose and his mother and sister were mugged in 2007. They first reached Mexico and finally settled in Tampa, Florida in 2008.
- Prior to the start of his senior year, Fernandez was wanted by MLB’s Cincinnati Reds, who awarded Jose, who was a free agent at the time, a $1.3 million contract bonus. Eventually, despite the issues he had with the Florida High School Athletic Association that rendered him ineligible, he was accepted for his senior year. He finished his senior year at Braulio Alonso High School.
- He was selected by the Florida Marlins as the 14th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft.
